The key to managing an effective off-campus experience is early planning.
  • 12 months before you go:
    • Research programs and request application form.
    • Consult an off-campus program advisor at your college.
    • Consult your faculty advisor.
    • Take coursework that will give you helpful background:
      • Language study.
      • World history.
      • Anthropology, sociology, or other courses that deal with cultures and religions of particular regions of the world.
      • Courses in political systems, current events, a specific area of the world, or specific global issues.
    • Talk to other students who have returned from overseas.
    • Consult your financial aid office.
  • 6-9 months before you go:
    • Submit your application forms early.
    • Arrange transfer of credit.
    • Get a passport and visa if they are required.
    • Make travel plans.
  • 3 months before you go:
    • Make plans for first term back at your home campus.
    • See a doctor and dentist.
    • Arrange adequate insurance.
    • Read newspapers or magazines that will keep you up to date about the places you will visit.
    • Attend orientation meetings or read orientation material.
